How to Choose the Perfect Rug Size for Every Room

Choosing the right rug size can make or break a room's design. A rug that's too small will look out of place, while one that's too large can overwhelm the space. Here's our complete guide to finding the perfect fit.
Living Room
For living rooms, the most common approach is to choose a rug large enough that all furniture legs sit on it — typically an 8x10 or 9x12 rug. If you prefer a floating layout, ensure the front legs of your sofa and chairs rest on the rug while the back legs remain on the floor. A minimum of 6x9 works well for smaller seating areas.
Bedroom
Place a large rug under the bed so it extends at least 18-24 inches on each side. This creates a soft landing when you step out of bed. For king beds, an 8x10 or 9x12 is ideal. Alternatively, use matching runners on each side.
Dining Room
Your dining rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides so chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out. For a standard 6-seat table, plan for an 8x10 rug minimum.
Hallway & Entryway
Runner rugs should be 2-3 feet wide and leave 4-6 inches of floor visible on each side. For entryways, a 3x5 or 4x6 rug works perfectly to define the space.
Pro Tip
When in doubt, go bigger. Use painter's tape to mark out rug dimensions on your floor before purchasing — it's the easiest way to visualize the final look.
